Work in Motriz

Threads and agents

Choose a thread mode, model, role, effort, files, artifacts, and voice input.

Choose a thread mode

ChatTalk, brainstorm, research, and create durable artifacts without editing repository files.
BuildImplement, fix, refactor, test, or review with a single agent or a flow.
Product DesignDiscover and design with the Product Specialist and Product/UI Designer.
Co-founderWork through a venture or sanity-check a build against existing evidence.

Journey and stopped ventures keep the Co-founder as their only new-thread mode. After a venture enters building, all four modes are available.

Understand when a thread is created

The new-thread screen is a draft. Selecting a mode, staging files, choosing artifacts, and configuring a run do not persist an empty thread. Motriz creates the thread when you send the first message. If upload or setup fails, it removes the empty thread automatically.

Configure a single agent

Single-agent mode is the default for Build. The composer controls define how the next run behaves:

ControlMeaning
ModelThe exact provider model. The picker groups configured providers, supports search, and accepts a typed model ID.
EffortThe provider's reasoning setting. Available levels change with the provider and model.
FastA separate priority or fast service tier where supported; it is not another reasoning level.
RoleThe system behavior layered onto the model, such as Coder, Planner, Reviewer, or System Architect.

Use Chat safely

The Chat Assistant is repository-aware but intentionally does not edit repository files. It can read and search project context, use web and integration tools, read attachments, and create durable artifacts. If the conversation identifies a code change, open a Build thread for the implementation.

Use Product Design

Product Design offers three persona choices:

  • Auto routes each message to the right product persona.
  • Specialist focuses on specifications, scope, user stories, and build prompts.
  • Designer focuses on product flows and high-fidelity multi-page HTML/CSS prototypes.

The repository is read-only reference in this mode. Product outputs go to the project artifact workspace, where they can be previewed, reviewed, versioned, or promoted into Build work.

Attach files

You can attach up to 10 files per message, with a maximum size of 10 MB per file. Supported categories include common source and text files, JSON, CSV, logs, PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, and PDF.

Motriz rejects empty, oversized, or unsupported files before the run. Uploads are stored in local app data under the project and thread, with sanitized names that avoid collisions.

Attach project artifacts

The artifact picker adds durable project context without exporting it into the repository first. Attached artifacts remain visible as composer chips and travel with the prompt when the thread or message is sent.

Dictate a prompt

Choose the microphone control to dictate with the selected local Whisper model. If no model is installed, Motriz opens Settings → Voice. Recording and transcription stay on the Mac.

  • Choose the microphone again to stop and transcribe.
  • Press Escape while recording to cancel.
  • Edit the transcribed text before sending.

Answer agent questions

Agents can present focused question cards with tappable options. Choose an option or type your own answer. This is especially useful in founder discovery, where the choices are grounded in the current conversation rather than a fixed questionnaire.

Send, stop, and continue

  • Press Enter to send and Shift+Enter for a newline.
  • While a run is active, the send control becomes Stop.
  • New messages continue the same thread with its stored conversation and project context.
  • The run timeline retains completion, cancellation, error, duration, usage, and nested activity.

Organize thread history

Rename threads to preserve intent, archive completed work, and group related threads into sidebar folders. Moving or deleting a folder does not alter repository files. Deleting a thread is permanent for its Motriz messages and is blocked while the thread runs.
